Op het Officiele Google blog, zei Amit Singhal:
“If I search for [olympics], I probably want information about next summer’s upcoming Olympics, not the 1900 Summer Olympics (the only time my favorite sport, cricket, was played). Google Search uses a freshness algorithm, designed to give you the most up-to-date results, so even when I just type [olympics] without specifying 2012, I still find what I’m looking for.”
This new change will give preference to:
- Recent events or hot topics
- Regularly recurring events (annual conferences, presidential elections, etc.)
- Frequent updates
And so that’s the one you really need to pay attention to — frequent updates.
If you think you can have a blog and write once a month in it, um… no. Writing every day is the best road, but in lieu of that, a few times a week is good. Less than that, and you’ll probably go unnoticed.
Of course, there are times when older material will still be relevant. In the case of recipes, for example, or “how-to” do something, the freshness of that information (unless there’s a huge change) isn’t as important.
Let’s say that you’re teaching someone to install a WordPress blog plugin. In the past, you’d need access to the FTP account where the blog lived. Now, you can install new plugins directly from your blog. So, that’s a major change. The information about the new plugin process would take precedence over the old.
Singhal also said, “Different searches have different freshness needs. This algorithmic improvement is designed to better understand how to differentiate between these kinds of searches and the level of freshness you need, and make sure you get the most up to the minute answers.”
So, look for this algorithmic change, which has already gone into effect. If your site that has been #1 for a given keyword hasn’t updated in a while, you could find it losing its plum placement.
